About

Indigo Crane | Anna Katherine Curfman

For Anna Katherine Curfman, Indigo Crane expresses her artistic desire to create beautiful handmade apparel through fiber arts. To accomplish this, she experiments with wool fiber and silk using her unique design approach. She creates nunofelted pieces with a strong sense of color and pattern. Feltmaking is a personal, physical, and meditative process that is at once fluid, fast, slow, and detailed. Each piece evolves from the artist’s inner calm into something that is planned, but with unexpected twists.

She hand crafts each piece by using feltmaking to migrate merino wool through silk chiffon in a process called nunofelting. This process creates a lightweight felt that is extremely durable and soft, with a delicate appearance. The scarves and wraps are versatile enough to be worn with all kinds of clothing.

Trained as a graphic designer and photographer at the Rhode Island School of Design, Anna Katherine worked closely with Dale Chihuly for nine years designing his art books. Chihuly’s love of color inspired her to seek color in all things. When she began feltmaking, she returned to her roots of sewing and needle arts and blended them with her design sensibilities and love of color.

She has exhibited her work in such places as the American Craft Exposition in Evanston, Il, Bayou City Arts Festival, Houston, TX, Bellevue Museum Artsfair in Bellevue, WA, Art Fair Jackson Hole in Jackson, WY, and Crafts Park Avenue in New York City, NY.
